Embroidered denim jacket {Pt.3}

Hello my friends!

Welcome back to another episode of what-have-I-been-up-to-recently!

This week I thought I’d post an update of the progress I’ve been making on my embroidered denim jacket!

I’m sure it’s going to look awesome when I finally finish it, denim is super tough to embroider but the stick and stitch paper is magic. Once I’d finished the dandelion and dandetiger I decided to cut away pretty much all of the excess design and and reprinted the pattern so I could literally cut out all the flowers I want to included and play with the layout as I go along, its made the process feel much more organic and if I want to move something from A to B it doesn’t mess with the overall design as I’m now making it up as I go along. So that I have plenty of room to manoeuvre I reprinted the whole image on the sticky paper flipped the image over and printed it again which means I’ve got more flowers to play with.

The wildflowers from Disney’s Alice In Wonderland (the 50’s disney cartoon) are literally my favourite part of the movie and I’m so excited to finish this project.

The pansies were actually really hard to do, I did actually completely unpick one as it was looking so evil! (I really don’t recommend trying to unpick on denim) because these flowers are so much smaller than the ones I’ve already finished I decided to outline them in tiny black stem stitches that I could just colour in between the lines which did speed the process up.

The next part I’m going to be working on is the iris and lily, the stem of the dandelion and I’m thinking of adding a couple of naughty daffodils at the bottom.

Hopefully it wont be too long before I post another update to track how everything’s going! So that’s it for this weeks denim-jacket-project post…I hope you enjoyed it.

As always thank you so much for reading my friends, and have a lovely week!

Ps. Its really hard to photograph this nicely in its current state!!

Embroidered Butterfly #17 {Clouded Yellow}

Hey friends!

I’ve been absent for a couple of weeks, theres a lot going on and I’ve had that horrid cold-thing that’s doing the rounds at the moment (not fun!!).

Still, I’ve got a new needlework butterfly to share with you! I’ve genuinely had the best butterfly year ever and encountered so many critters, I’ve even met my very first Clouded Yellow! I always thought I’d have to physically go and search for these butterflies and never in my wildest dreams did I think one would show up in my own back garden and I wanted to create one to add to my ever growing collection of handmade butterflies.

This is #17 on my Embroidered Butterfly challenge – only 59-ish more to go!!! I worked it out if I make one a month it should only take like another four or so years!

Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) who is one of our regular migrant species is considered to be a large butterfly with a wingspan up to 62mm, they tend to rest with their wings closed which is a shame because they are so pretty.

Embroidered Butterfly #16 {Marbled White}

Hello my friends!

I really hope you’re enjoying the bank holiday weekend if you’re in the UK or just enjoying a nice normal weekend generally!

The week before last I posted all about exploring Penlee Battery nature reserve where I met many, many beautiful butterflies and even a few day flying moths. I really enjoyed being able to spot so many Marbled White butterflies and thought I would create an embroidered version for my collection.

These amazing black and white checkerboard butterflies have a real life wingspan of around 5.5cm and are considered to be a medium size chap! I only created a female as there aren’t too many differences between the two sexes.

My needlework Marbled white has a wingspan of more or less 11cm and she’s #16 of my needlework butterfly quest.

Embroidered Butterfly #15 {Silver Studded Blue}

Hello my friends!

How’s the heat where you are?

A couple of weeks ago I posted a One frame of a Silver studded Blue butterfly I recently met a Cubert Common while adventuring in the sunshine.

It was so cool to see an increasingly rare species just living its best life out in the wild – although that being said according to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, thousands of them have been spotted here this summer which is awesome!

These tiny blue butterflies have a real life wingspan of only 3cm how anything that small survives in the wild is beyond me! I created a male and female as this type of butterfly has whats called Sexual dimorphism  which basically means you can tell the boys from the girls.

My needlework Silver studded blues have a wingspan of about 6cm and they’re #15 of my needlework butterfly quest, the male is the lovely blue one (all the ones I’ve seen have been male) and the little brown one is the much more reserved female.

Embroidered denim jacket {Pt.2}

Hello my friends and welcome!

I scheduled this to post last night (Saturday) but for some reason it didn’t work!?

Anyhoo…

This week I thought I’d post a super quick update of the progress I’ve been making on my embroidered denim jacket!

Watching Alice In Wonderland (the 50’s disney cartoon) is literally one of my favourite childhood memories (along with Sleeping beauty) and I just love the Wildflowers so it made total sense to decorate this jacket with them.

I can only embroider the denim for a few days at a time as its so thick it just hurts my fingers too much (I’ve actually taken to wearing plasters as I hate thimbles!) and I’ve removed the rest of the stick ’n’ stitch paper as it had begun to unstick in places. My new plan is to reprint the design and just stick on each flower as I go – it also makes it look a little less daunting.

So far I’m incredibly pleased with how its looking, the Dandy-tiger is my favourite as it look so 3D!

Embroidered denim jacket {New project Pt.1}

Hey friends,

I don’t know about you but as a craft minded person I sort of have a craft bucket list of all the things I’d really like to make (or at least have a go at!) something I’ve always wanted to create is an amazingly embroidered one-of-a-kind denim jacket!

I found this particular jacket at my local thrift joint about eight months ago and totally fell in love with its ridiculously long sleeves, its a bit big but the sleeves are just too cool, plus its really soft.

Fleeting thought #8 {Festive traditions and time well spent}

Hello my friends! I hope the festive season is filling you with excitement and wonder!!

Before we start this post I just wanted to say that I did truly believe I was going to post this last week and do something cute and artsy this week but my life kinda imploded. I’m not a superstitious person, but I’m a great believer that things come in threes so when I awoke last Friday (the 13th) I found that my heating system had completely broken down and won’t be fixed until after the New Year (it is soooo cold right now!) Later in the day I fell down the stairs – my own fault I wasn’t paying attention, but I was so very very sore and by the time I was able to sit and prep my post I just thought ‘ya know what its not worth it, it might be the third thing!’ It wasn’t but I was glad I didn’t tempt Fate!

But I’ve decided that I’m a big girl and I’m not going to let the fact I’ve got no heating ruin Christmas as I’ve already got everything more or less sorted, so onto a more festive up beat thing…

Fleeting thought #7 {Fallen leaves & favoured pastimes}

Hey friends,

If you’ve never been here before then welcome!!

Today I wanted to share the seventh Fleeting Thought with you. Its been a while since my last one of these, so here goes…

Autumn is just lovely isn’t it?

The sound of the geese flying south for the winter – or the Starlings congregating in their  murmurations, where I live is actually quite close to a forest that thousands of starlings live in the winter, every day at around seven o’clock morning and night you can hear them flying overhead you can literally set your watch by them! The parks and woodlands are filled with warm, beautifully mesmerising colours – even though the weather is less on the warm side! You can get your jumpers out and it’s okay to drink hot chocolate at lunch time.

Also pyjamas, pyjamas seem to always feature more in the autumn/winter months…the anti-social introvert in me loves a jammies day, especially if I’ve got a good book to read or an embroidery to finish.

Fleeting thought #6 {hand stitching & reflections}

Welcome back to another edition of my ramblings…how ya doing?! My intention really was to post this last week but I had Covid and I (not to sound dramatic) thought I was dying, literally I couldn’t get out of bed. Crazy really I managed not to catch Covid during the actual pandemic and then catch it randomly from a lady at church.

I thought I’d share a new Fleeting thought with you this week. A little different to normal this one is more of an insight into my love of embroidery.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while then you might have seen one or two of my embroidered butterfly posts. A lot of people ask me about my butterfly pins as I wear them (normally in my hair) and are often quite shocked when I tell them they are made by hand.

It kinda pushed me to the question.

Why do I embroider things in my spare time?
