Embroidered Butterfly #3 {Painted Lady} (updated May 2024)

Hey friends!

**This post was edited on 17/5/24 as I’ve remade the butterfly and updated the pictures**

How ya doing?

I’ve got a new embroidered butterfly to share with you this week as we’re coming to the end of the Butterfly Count. Over the last six weeks I’ve been raising twelve Painted lady caterpillars (I did a post on them a couple of weeks ago) who all successfully pupated into beautiful butterflies that are now living out free in the big wide world and I couldn’t resist the chance to create a needlework one!!

So this is #3 on my Embroidered Butterfly challenge. Seeing as there are 61 types of butterflies in the UK I’ve got quite a few more to do.

Painted ladies are another type where its hard to tell the boys from the girls and they are so pretty!

The Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland by Richard Lewington is full of these amazing sketches and facts about each type of butterfly with is super helpful and I’ve also got a copy of Butterflies of Cornwall, atlas for the twenty-first century which is crammed with useful info. Once I’m happy with the drawing I copy it onto calico and colour the pieces in with the closest matching threads I have.

I really love the makings of a these butterflies which have a real wingspan of 5-5.5cm and so size wise this one is about 11cm across, I actually remade it recently, as the wire edging technique helps the wings keep their shape better!

That’s a wrap for this week! Thank you so much for checking this out and I wish you a wondrous week ahead!

Ps. My post on raising Painted ladies is HERE and if you want to have a look at my other needlework butterflies they’re HERE!

Psps. Also my butterflies are tagged #ArtymisskButterflies on WordPress and my other socials.
