Traversing the Sandy Grassland {Exploring Cubert Common}

Hey friends! How are ya?

This week I had the opportunity to go exploring on the gently undulating sandy grasslands of a wonderful little National Trust site called Cubert Common – which happens to be one of the few enclosed Commons we have in the country. I had so much fun during that sunny (albeit windy) day and I wanted to take you guys along with me so you can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and pretty plants too! I hope these photos bring as much joy to your day as much as they did mine.

Cubert Common is a rather tranquil trail though open grassland – its also a Site of Special Scientific Interest as its home to some rare plants and bugs! It’s a beautiful place to walk and is filled with some lovely wildflowers like primrose and cowslips, with yellow flag iris growing in the damp marsh-y bits.

Gotta say for my first trip the beauty of the place was kinda magical.

Something I love about photographing flowers is that even once they’ve faded and the petals have fallen off, the seed pods can still be so interesting to look at and my inner child loves a dandelion plant – I have no idea what this one is actually called, but I like the contrast between the lush green background and the dry plant with its pom-poms.

Obviously I had to try and find some butterflies, this tiny Common blue male was diligently clinging to a yellow rattle plant in the wind. He was most gracious and it took serval attempts to get a good shot.

A Common blue is only about 3.5 cm across and they are just so impossibly small in real life!

Isn’t he a fabulous colour?!

The landscape was beautiful and there were so many different kinds of grasses…not just the green stuff that grows in a garden, but pretty ones with fluffy tips! This was my view as I whiled away lunch time.

I felt a bit like Alice sitting amongst the tall grass!

This was a first for me as I’ve never seen a wild orchid before! Apparently this is the Common spotted orchid and I was quite pleased to have found some and got a few decent snaps!

The dead flower heads of this Bladder campion almost look like tiny eggshells…or maybe fairy lanterns and although I didn’t see any rabbits there were so many rabbit holes dug into the sand.

From the top of the grassland I could see all the way to Polly joke beach (which happens to be the end of the walk). I couldn’t believe how tropical the sea looked – although it would’ve been a bit rough to swim in because of the wind.

I could’ve literally sat there all day.

I really hope you enjoyed this little slice of Cubert common. Hopefully you’ll be back to read more of my nature filled posts in the future, thank you so much for checking out my blog and have a great weekend!
