A Wintery Walk

Hello my friends!

Before I start, I totally meant to post this last week but due to storm Bert I had no power (the perils of living in the countryside!!).

I am so unbelievably excited about this post as before the storm properly hit I woke up to five whole inches of snow!

Snow is one of those things that I will never get tired of and usually when we do get it here its only a light dusting, so the fact it was so deep was amazing (I literally haven’t seen so much snow since I was a kid when we lived in Scotland).

Obviously I just had to go walking in it and wanted to take you with me so you can enjoy the pretty winter atmosphere and stroll through the countryside too! I hope these photos bring as much happiness to your day as much as they did mine.

Starting off our wintery walk, I headed to one of the local fields to snap a quick landscape shot, all the fields looked so serene, every one could’ve been a scene on a Christmas card.

I have no idea what this plant was when it was flowering but couldn’t resist the fascinating way the snow crystals had gathered in a ball, like a very cold pompom.

Doesn’t my lovely little village in the middle of nowhere just look so picturesque?! Seeing all the lush fields blanketed in white was so calming and peaceful.

Another snowy pompom flower! I think its mind boggling how nature can create such beautiful forms and that the water crystal collect in to clumps on the plant as opposed to lying flat along the stems.

Now, I think this might have been a hog weed in its summer days, and I thought how vividly coloured it looked against the blue and cold hues behind it.

Something I’ve always loved about snow is looking for animal tracks and was so pleased to find tiny little bird footprints along this verge (I assume they live in the hedgerow). The poor little thing that left these prints must’ve almost disappeared in it!

Ada and Maizie hadn’t seen snow before and were like land dolphins leaping through the white stuff. This was literally the best shot I could get of the two of them, they were just running round like total loons! Once they stopped running about in glee I put their coats back on and by the afternoon could tell both the girls had definitely had enough of the snow. In the end they were going out in the garden and I could almost see them thinking ‘The white stuff is nice mum, but can’t you put it away now!’

By the end of the day and with the afternoon sunshine the snow was already beginning to melt in places – not on the ground but the trees were the first to lose their wintery blanket, I assume this is something to do with the miracles of nature and that trees have some sort of de-ice setting.

The worst part of being surrounded by such a beautiful, fleeting thing as snow was that within 36 hours every trace of it had vanished and the storm bought with it high winds and torrential rain! I wanted to try and gauge how much rain we were had by leaving my wheelbarrow to collect it and by the next day it was over flowing with rain water (not a particularly scientific test but anyhoo!)

I really hope you enjoyed joining me on a stroll through the countryside and that it bought a little peace to your day because it filled me a great amount of positivity and happiness. Next week I’ve got a new butterfly or possibly something festive to share with you!

As always thank you so much for reading my friends, and have a lovely week!
