Exploring Penlee Battery {Landscapes and butterflies}

Hey friends! How are ya?

Once again I’m a little late posting, but the week got away from me slightly!

With all of the amazing weather we’ve been having I took a little time to explore Penlee Battery which is a nature reserve down near Rame head. I had so much fun during my adventures that day and I wanted to take you guys along with me so you can enjoy the wonders of Penlee battery and all of the wonderful nature too! I hope these photos bring as much brightness to your day as much as they did mine.

It was beautiful I literally can’t wait to go back!

It’s a wonderful place to walk and enjoy some time with nature, I’ve become fascinated with how meadows work and the different grasses all work together to create a whole ecosystem and support so much life.

There were plenty of Large white butterflies (one of my favourites) happily fluttering around the brambles, I even spotted a few Ringlet butterflies in the distance as well, although the photos weren’t particularly good through the grass.

The ground was carpeted with this wonderful little pink flower called Restharrow, which is a plant recognised for its strength and endurance due to its ability to grow in harsh places.

Excitingly there were almost fifty of the Marble White (Melanargia galathea) butterflies with their checkerboard patterned wings and at least one hundred Mead brown (Maniola jurtina) butterflies, a ‘boring’ brown fellow who flutters serenely around fields and gardens alike, I’ve never seen so many butterflies at one time it was awesome to walk through the long grass in the fields and just be surrounded by clouds of them!

I even had a new ‘plant first’ and found some Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis) which were happily swaying in the gentle breeze, Field scabious was used in medical folklore to treat skin ailments like scabies, eczema and even plague. Its also known as Gypsy Rose which is such a better name!

Its a popular flower and great source of nectar for our pollinators…I may need to have a go at growing some for my garden!

You walk through the woodland section into the wonderful grass meadow and follow a path to the cliff edge where you can see across the water, the views are simply stunning.

There were also loads of these Six Spot Burnett moths (Zygaena filipendulae) which are a day flying moth seen on the wing from June to August there are an amazing irrindesant black/blue colour…interestingly the red spots of burnet moths are suppose to indicate to predators that they are poisonous as they release hydrogen cyanide when attacked!

I love this shot of the gentle slope with one lone tree growing in it. I really hope you enjoyed seeing some of the nature at Penlee Battery!

Hopefully you’ll be back to read more of my nature filled posts in the future, thank you so much for checking out my blog and have a great weekend!
